Instabilities in the plasma power balance produce a number of observed phenomena which may limit the performance achievable with Tokamak plasmas (e.g. radiative collapse leading to disruption, MARFEs, enhanced transport, operational density limits, correlation with energy confinement) and may lead to power excursions in burning plasmas. Investigation of thermal instabilities in Tokamak plasmas has been a research focus in the GeorgiaTech Fusion Research Center for several years.
